When are you moving? Or have you moved already? Mike had a kick racing cross this year---I'm surprised you haven't been doing it all along...It's like a hammer TT for an hour with some technical bike savvy thrown in for good measure. Right up your alley. I'll come watch you race BMX! (Gotta tell me what color your jersey is though---can't you dish on your new team yet? Or did I miss it somewhere in your blog? (The Parkpre clue left me clueless as ever!) I think my brain froze along with my common sense---but we're looking to get to the freezing mark this weekend...who knows? My husband may come home from work one day and find that his wife split with her bike in tow for warmer climates. (Of course, any place is warmer than here....sigh)
Damn, Joni--just get some warmer clothes and suck it up. The more you complain, the colder it gets. This is from someone who is used to riding in this weather. Ride your mountain bike on the snowmobile trails. Anything is better than complaining all the time.
good on ya, man. pure roadies are pussies. the real stoke is in doing fucking cool shit with your bike. hardly ever do you get to do cool shit on the road.
race anything with two wheels and a crank.
parkpre LA represent, baby.
What about cross? This could be you:

PrePark = SeaSilver?
Ya Joni girlie, mtb it when the weather chills. No wind and a damn lot more fun than doing 4 hours on the pavement. Lead, follow or get out of the way. Not many kcals burned with a keyboard and mouse.
Erok should race anything on wheels with pedals..... big wheels, unicycles, old folks grocery cart trikes.
Off to ride in the balming RVA 44 degree weather!
I thought ParkPre was no longer associated with Seasilver, which is no longer associated w/ cyclists...
re: PrePark...
OK, that was my one shot. Anyone care to offer up a theory as to Erok's team based on the PrePark bike sales here?
You guys are just noticing the ParkPre clue? Seasilver might not be the sponsor but does that mean the team is gone?
saunders....if you go off of the pavement, its going to be an ugly and sad story. best of luck picking yourself off the deck!

No, I Actually thought of it as soon as it went up but, see, here's the thing:
I don't really care.
Erik can talk to me about sponsorship* when/if he's good and god-damned ready. Until then it's not really my concern. And if he does talk to me in private, I'm sure as hell not going to spill the beans or start rumors on HIS blog.
*(or moving, or marriage, or fatherhood, or...)
no way dude.. i am pretty bad ass i have to say...
i am a pretty good bike driver in the dirt...
parke,
You must care if you responded. I haven't spilled any beans or started any rumors, I just asked a question. I am also waiting for Erik to announce when he's ready.
Joni,
Not to be contrary, but TTing and Cyclo-Cross couldn't be more different.. TTing is all about rythm... CX is at it's most basic lever about totaly destroying rhythm...
I can rock the socks off of 85-90% of the cat1 guys in the US in a TT... But I would get a nasty spanking in a 'B' class CX race.... (even if I practiced technique)
TT guys are not made, they are born.... Same goes for CX guys... Very rarely do those genetic lines cross.
IMHO.

EROK:
Move bitch... I have no one to train with in NC... I have ambitions as a ryder like, but 5+hrs solo in the cold rain and snow sucks.
(I just refrenced the Grateful Dead and Tupac in the same sentance. Score.)
Parke,
I want to transfer old videos to DVD. What is the best inexpensive ($100-200)video capture device/bridge out there that doesn't require a super fast processor. I have a 1.6G AMD Turion processor. Any advice would be cool--I don't want to waste money on a piece of junk and from your previous posts it looks like you know what you're talking about.
nah - back to the dirt thing - why on earth would you race dirt? there's no money in XC unless you're really fast, or really smart. Even less in CX - and you're not going anywhere there, either. For fun - tear it up, brother, i think that's great...but if you expect results to flow, well, regional results will be telling. I say this knowing that you'll bring a decent engine from the road, but it'll be like driving a corvette on snow, cuz you'll end up in the ditch.
I just meant that it's a game-on race at full throttle for the hour (or so). and from the sidelines, they are very similar which is where I am at the races. (re: TT vs. Cross). And Erik's got the motor and he's pretty crafty with his bike handling skills. Like he jumps on his road bike like it's a cross bike. Very cool (again, from the sidelines).
It's definitely more than bike handling though because I always thought that Dave McCook would be awesome in cross, being one of the craftiest bike handler's I know. But he doesn't have the "go hard for an hour" TT thing going on, even though hardly anyone is faster than he is in a sprint. (my opinion only).
(Note - no complaints on the weather. Last two days, on the road bike and outside! It's almost 40 degrees---which is 40+ degrees warmer than it's been! Do tell me what you wear when you "tough guys" are riding around in sub-zero weather. I love the thought though that my complaining about the weather made it worse....oh to be so powerful...but point taken--no more complaining---although as a chick, I thought it was my right. )
Erik...I got a Minnesota racer heading out West in the next week or so who'll be hooking up with Prenzlow for some riding out in So. CAL before heading up North to the Bay Area. Send me email if you want to hook up with these guys and do some riding. Very cool cats!
ready to laugh-
i race ALL bikes... soul biker...
i dont know about your idea... i think cross is all about bike driving... those good riders make a lot of watts and they are mad strong... put that with bike driving skills and they are good in cross.. the effort is a lot like a crit where you make big power spikes and accelerations but you also have a lot of zeros in the power graph too... so as far as the effort goes its not a ton different than what you would expect to see in any other race.. the difference is the bike driving... and i think i am a good bike driver...
seriously.. its not as if a road guy is a corvette and a cross rider is a wrx... we are all the same car... its just knowing how to drive it and a few tweaks to the engine...
wells is really strong in a straight line at a steady effort... he proved that can rip a TT effort in the tour of connecticut... that obviously doesnt preclude him from being good in the dirt...
bike racing is realy simple... you either make the watts or you dont... and in the case of cross, once you make the watts you have to handle the bike in zone 5...
Joni,
If you still feel the need to ride your road bike in sub-zero F temps, maybe it's time to diversify a little bit. Skate skiing is cool, and a better workout than cycling. Minnesota has some great trails--you should check them out. I wasn't kidding about riding your mtb on the snowmobile trails, either--it's really a lot of fun. Just have a light on your bike somewhere so you don't get run over by a drunk-ass bar-hopper. The wind-chill factor isn't so much a factor anymore, and you have to work your ass off in the deeper patches of snow. By the way, I wasn't implying that you, specifically, were more powerful than anyone else, as far as the ability of your expectations to influence your physical sensation of temperature--I was just saying that your propensity for complaining that you are freezing your ass off made it seem that you were colder than you actually were. This was probably obvious to most of the people who read that post. I don't mind restating in more explicite terms, though. Finally--do you really feel, as a "chick," that you have an inherent right to complain just as a matter of course? That would be sad.
Stay warm.
But there's not a whole lot of "sitting in" in a cross effort like there is in a crit. Wells is smooth as silk on a cross bike...his mounts and dismounts look like a ballet they are so smooth and rhythmic. I guess that's what I meant. Ben & Andy Jacques-Mayne and Jackson too are pretty smooth both on cross/TT. Not the best in the TT, but pretty damn smooth on both. It's the all out effort part that reminds me most of a TT...zone 5 with watts! Yeah baby!
oh to be in a really cool part of Minnesota where there were snowmobile trails, etc. I'm in the Southwestern part of the state---the windy prairie...closer to South Dakota (much) than to the cities. I can be in South Dakota in less than 30 miles or so. Been XC skiing some (there's one place to go)...and I'm not really a complainer...I'm mostly overwhelmed by what cold *really* feels like. If you're a Minnesotan, than you are way ahead of the game in what cold is. If you're a Texan born-Alabama-bred-Californian mutt like me, it's a bit overwhelming. I'm having fun though---I just do better in the triple digit's than I do in single digit's and below.
Happy Christmas and Merry New Year you bike racing God's you!

By old videos, I assume you mean VHS tapes and not 16 or 9mm film...
Charlie, I work mainly with pro/broadcast video equipment, so I have surprisingly little to offer in the way of consumer electronics. What I do know is that there is NOTHING in the $100-200 range that will convert VHS analog to digital that is of any particular quality.
I say if money's the issue, pick the cheapest one and have at it. Chances are they were all built in the same Lucky Goldstar factory anyway
Better yet, get yourself a GOOD VCR player and a GOOD video card (w/ an NTSC composite/S-video input), and capture it direct to your PC without the outboard gear.

Thanks Parke--much appreciated.
Joni,
Point taken for sure--I know the part of Minnesota you are talking about. You almost have to put snow fencing up around your house. I lived in Colorado for 3 years, and even that was a big transition when I moved back to the Midwest. I'm from Wisconsin, though, so like you say, I'm kind of used to it. I live in LaCrosse, WI now, which has some awesome road riding and Winona,MN has some really good mountain biking, hiking, and road riding too. That's a drive for you, but not too bad. If you guys ever get to the Eastern side of the state let me know--the riding around here is actually really good.
Happy Holidays
LaCrosse rules...as does Winona, Lanesboro, and Eau Claire. You definitely have more options when the white stuff falls and when the roads are clear you have some glorious road riding. (The milk truck's need nicely paved roads afterall to get out to those cows!) I'm in Marshall...where, you're lucky if it's paved---don't need pavement to farm corn, soybeans, sugar beets or pigs. The snow blows sideways....and the drifts confuse the panorama to make you think there are mountains. It's trippy. Like across the street they'll get maybe an inch of snow, and you'll have 8 inches and have to shovel just to get outside. Last night it rained, snowed, sleeted...so now we have a layer of ice, with snow and more ice. I'm looking for the bourbon and it's just past 9 in the morning! Ha! Beer doesn't cut it anymore.
