why does kool and the gang suck now?

they should have never gotten a singer... they just should have kept jammin their instruments... they jammed so hard that they even put out some disco songs and they didnt suck... but as soon as they started doing lame songs like "too hot" and "ladies night" the wheels just fell right off... "celebration" was the sound of the kool and the gang funky bus grinding down on the axles and transfer case then bursting into flames killing all abord...

Oh man, Erik, how can you bag on Kool and the Gang. I saw them about 18 months ago up here in NorCal at one of those Indian Casino's and they were damn good.

Celebrate good times, come on!

I went to school with the guy that wrote "celebration" when he was 16-he got a check for $40k every month. that's pro.

yeah.. i bet.. thats both their biggest and suckiest song... they definitely went out in a HUGE way.. they probably talked about it and were like.. well we are gonna just throw it all away and suck.. so lets just fucking go big time... outside writers, pop songs, retarted lyrics.. i mean lets really become unfunky and see how brightly we can shine before we can become irrelevant to american music...

i know, i always thought that this guy was kind of embarassed about the whole deal. America- land of the sell out?

It is very important to stay true to one's self and values... That being said, there is a LOT of borderline sketchy shit I would do for $40K every month. THAT being said, anyone with offers can contact me at grahamslater528@hotmail.com ... Thanks.

saul is a train-a-holic... he needs to go to TA...

Oh yeah, that's exactly what we need, a 12-step program for competive people.

"no way dude, I got WAY more chips than you"
Yeah, well I'm more anonymous"...

I wish I had something thoughtful to add to the topic of music, but for once I got nothing.
Other than I think Kool and the Gang and Earth Wind and Fire both followed that script. Oh, except EW&F didn't have the huge hit.

tupapawhatever:

I know, I know. I can't believe I'm about to say something so stereotypical and too obvious to be hip but:

If you want to talk horns, T O P is where it's at.

There, I said it. EW&F is great, I really DO appreciate the arrangments and musicality of the early stuff, but they kinda ran outta steam in my opinion.

(FREEBIRD!)

Ah jeez... now I feel like a dirty jam-band hippie.

I hope you're happy with yourself tupapi.

i like kool and the gand because they were a bit dirtier than EWF...

bootsy live jams are the king dirty sloppy sound...

and i like also early funkadelic (when they were more psychadelic) for their dirty blues and soul funky style...

i like bands that you can hear the mistakes that turn into something cool.. and i like bands that play together and listen to eachother.. you can hear the commraderie.. and the improvisation...

I'd have to agree with the dirtier sound bit, I guess that's the crux of why I dislike EW&F - they're too "polished".

It's more soul than funk, but when I said "T O P" what I had in mind was the Hubert TIbbs/Chester Thompson/Lenny Picket era. Check out "Live and in Living Color" for some seriously "dirty" and visceral grooves.

Also, Brand New Heavies have their moments.

Funkadelic and Bootsy are the bomb. I might add to that The Ohio Players. Funkzilla baby!

Jimmy Smith just died, RIP...

Atleast Soulive is carrying the torch. I haven't picked up the new album w/ lyrics, but I hope it's not a repeat of Kool & The Gang...
Soulive is another kick-ass show.

Shame. "So Romantic" was a promising start.

If you're looking for more experiemental/Jazzy soul, I can recommend John Scofield's collaboration W/ Medesky-Martin-Wood on Scofield's AGoGo.
The title track in particular..
