The base case I have in mind is the survival of Dutch in the Hudson Valley after the English took over in 1664. In various rural pockets as well as among well-to-do people of Dutch heritage, Dutch continued to be spoken for close to 300 years. (In the 1800s, Martin Van Buren and his wife spoke Dutch in the White House; Teddy Roosevelt learned some Dutch from his grandparents who spoke it at the dinner table; Sojourner Truth grew up on a New York farm speaking Dutch only until she was 12 years old; there is evidence of Dutch surviving in the NJ Ramapo hills into the 1920s and in the Catskills until after WWII). I'm trying to get at what cultural factors enabled this survival, but I'd also like to know how unusual it is. For example, languages like German, Polish and Italian seem to die out among immigrant families within a generation or two, despite plenty of critical mass in immigrant communities and the survival of many other cultural attributes among them.

the saunders baby arrives

her name is sabine olivia and she is a nice baby... and she sleeps pretty good and she doesnt cry all the time... i am pretty tired and i was up for two days but i slept ok last night.. i only had to get up once.. i walked around for 40 minutes in the house with her so she would sleep... she just sleeps and eats and thats it for now... she just doesnt sleep for long periods and so neither can we... i cant imagine going on any bike rides.. not that i did that many of those anyway... the mom is ok... her feet dont hurt all the time anymore so she is happy about that...

Ethno-linguistic map of Europe before World War I this map shows the languages of europe up to 1914... obviously that was not long ago and languages on this map persist... i am having a hard time finding more modern maps... but this one is pretty good... there are a ton of interestin maps here...

basque cease fire

being that the basque ETA organization has announced its permanent cease fire and end to its terrorist nuisance activities i am given a reason to think about something that i have thought about before...

modern nations... its sort of not a normal thing.. and its something that we mostly take for granted and we assume that nations have always existed in this same way throughout history.. but they havent... and when i was in europe i was intrigued to see all the nations within nations that persist to this day.. some of them have military liberation fronts (ETA) and some have been in political struggles to maintain ther culture against federal powers mandating assymilation (bretons)...

the basques are a people who live in the pyrenees of france and spain on the atlantic coast... they have names with a lot of x's in them... and they speak their own language... the bretons are celtic peoples living in the britanny peninsula of france.. they have their own language as well and are quite nationalistic... they wear kilts and play bagpipes but they dont drink green beer on st patty's day nor do they reminisce about larry bird and kevin mc hale... both of these ethnic minorities have varying degrees of aspirations to be autonomous but they do both have "national" flags that are seen proudly waving at sporting events and they both have pro cycling teams.. euskatel-euskadi and bretagne jean floch'...

there is also in the south of france near marseille an ethnic minority that has its own language and even its own nightly news broadcast...

i am interested to find a map that shows all the little kingdoms that predated the nations of europe that we currently know...

here in the states i always has this idea that homogeny was the normal way of a nation.. but after seeing nations in europe that arent so homogeneous as you might think it made me think more than ever that its ok to have a lot of different people and different languages... never mind the question of immigration... then you take a place like switzerland with 4 official languages...

i'll think about this some more.. and i am gonna watch also that movie about TV...

You know... Poor jay got screwed by heidi... She comissioned him for an emmy dress and then the day before kills the deal... I hope he is compensated for his time... Because i can imagine that the whole thing gets to be a convoluted dog and pony show and its easy to end up convinced that its in your interest to do things that you end up jacked on...

For most people things dont work out and people screw you and take advantage while you are thinking the whole time that the pay off is coming and as long you keep getting screwed that just makes the pay off that much bigger... Yeah... Right...

The last lap i guess got a bit tough with healthnet putting the race in the gutter... It finished in 3 groups of ten or so... I couldnt really tell from the van... But it was warm in there...

dear erik, why are people so stupid?

Well... the bible explains this... A long time ago people existed... In eden... And people were simple and perfect... But things started to happen to show that people had been corrupted in a big way... Eve ate the apple and they got smart... She wasnt supposed to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge... And we all know that to be a true ignorant dummy is bliss... but as soon as we got a little knowledge it put us at odds with god and the downhill slide of humanity began... Anyway... So that got things going down hill... And then kane killed his own brother able... And so it went until god had to destroy all living things save for the best of the worst- a crazy old man named noah... He was good hearted but otherwise he was a nut... So god flooded the earth and all was destroyed except for the animals in the ark and noah' s family....and when the waters receded there they were... And we are all the inbred progeny of a crazy old man... And so this is why people are stupid to this day...
