OK fine, If we're going to repeat this post we should at least add something to it...
-The Science Behind the Soda Skeet-
This is not some high-energy chemical reation. The "fountain effect" is from all the potential energy stored in the soda (in the form of carbonated bubbles, "shocked" in there by the soda company) being suddenly released (through a small hole in the cap). It's effectively the same thing as getting on the podium in the Giro and shaking a bottle of champagne with your finger over the top (not that any of us has ever done that).
So why mentos? -'Cause the "egshell" candy coating is the perfect surface for small CO2 bubbles to collect quickly, setting forth the chain reaction.
So why Diet Coke? -Various reasons... It's highly carbonated and Nutrisweet/Sachrin doesn't have quite the same thickening/matrixing properties as other sugars. Especially when it comes time to clean up.
So will this work with any thing dropped into any soda? -yes, but through trial and error most people thin Mentos and Diet Soda is best combo.
