i am about tired of all the boo hoo reporting on people with no flood insurance...

if i have to hear one more time about how evil insurance companies are i will puke... they arent any more evil than cnn...

if you live below sea level surrounded by water... or in a coastal area known for harsh winds and swells just do yourself a favor and get flood insurance.. its cheap... go to the city or county records where you live and look at the flood map... if your house is in a flood area just go ahead and spend the money and get insurance... and make sure that your policy for damages of any kind is up to date and adequate to rebuild taking into account current costs...

i had flood insrance in the desert and it seemed silly but i can tell you that it was neccessary...

in the three years i lived there this happened once that it was this severe near my house... the road is 50 feet wide and was filled with 3 feet of water running this fast... the water came up to the foundation of the house eventually but never got the last half inch up above the slab... it lasted an hour like this...

Yeah so I agree with you for the most point on this, but being from New Orleans I am a bit torn. Losses in my family: Parents: entire 1st floor, Sister: entire house, Brother: entire house. Thankfully, they all had flood insurance, which any sane person in New Orleans would not have been without. However, having said that I do know people who were told by their insurance agents that they didn't need/shouldn't get flood insurance. So it sucks for those people, but as long as I lived there we knew all along that a hurricane would hit, the levees would break, and the city would flood. Shit my brother's house (previously my grandparents) was raised ~4' and still had 5' of water in it.
Oh yeah, don't believe that only the poor and disenfranchised were effected. My brother's house has been looted multiple times since the storm. Most recently a little over 2 weeks ago, and he & his wife ar ejsut trying to get back on their feet.
And for all those who want to blame the feds, blame gov Blanco for not requesting the national guard to come in. She and Ray Nagan decided they should try to control it on a local level, but were simply unable to do so.

i came out of this not being a fan of old blind and prideful ray.. long live old-time southern politicains... and blanco...

its true that not only the poor were affected...

interesting story though- its true that there was an unsually high amount of home ownership among the poorer residents... because N.O. has historically had a succesful black working class who achieved a decent amount of economic security and success... and these generations passed their family homes on to their offspring... so you ended up with people having homes that were paid for!... what a nice deal... if only some of them had the abiltity and knowledge to insure their assett against the inevitability of a flood... i wonder why there was no forward thinking NPO who made these people aware of the neccessity of insurance for such a thing... in retrospect it was needed... people knew what was going to happen... and in the interest of protecting the city and looking out for the underclass it seems like somebody would have throught of it... but maybe they would not have been taken seriously...

the thing is thought that the insurance companies will not have to pay out any of these claims... i just cant see it...

nor can i see what cnn gets out of reporting on all these people (most of whom are white and retired) with the idea of showing them as victims of big callous business.. but not as people who should have known to have flood insurace... the story is- the industry is making record profits but they wont share any with you when you are hurting so so badly...

its the same thing when jon stuart was all up on so and so from such and such company as to why the oil companies were making record profits but the price of gas was so high... i can tell you why... because the refineries are slammed, and people want always more and more gas!... duh... drive a prius if you dont like the price of gas... cheap gas isnt a right... the oil companies should be rolling in dough... if they arent they are a bunch of idiots... gas should cost way more!... how about that!?... america has made (shit in) its bed... so we just have to lie in it and thats the way it is...
