apparently the city is below sea level and is surrounded by a system of levys (dikes in holland) to keep water out... there is also a lot of rainfall which needs to be pumped out of the city because there is no natural drainage since the city has been made to sit in a bowl...
there is a lot of talk about the city being flooded by breaks in the levys... it is being implied that the problem is being exacerbated by the failure of the city's rainwater pump system... but it is not being said that the pumps were never intended to pump flood waters, only excess water from the normal amount of rainfall...
in fact on one radio program it was explained that the pumps were knowingly constructed and placed in such a way that they would be surely rendered inoperable in the event of a very large flood... the pumps and levy system were conceived and designed separately and never intended to work in tandem during such a disaster...

this would be indeed the case about New Orleans..It sucks and is a really bad situation, say some prayers to whatever you believe in...
will do!
yeah but don't you kind of think the biggest shock to nawlins'ers is the fact that they're flooded with 100% water and not the 50/50 urine/booze mix that they're used to being flooded with come Mardi Gras?
Wow. Bad form man. Maybe not a spiteful comment, but really tactless. You might want to check out the news and see how bad the situation REALLY is before cracking jokes. Graham Slater.
Cities below sea level, regardless of the logic or infrastucture designed to make it functional should be abandoned as "a really bad idea"
i agree... no ammount of planning and infrastructure can circumvent the rules of nature and beat god...
its like god is saying "you idiots arent supposed to be living here and building up all this crap"...
but you cant stop the human scourge from unwittingly destroying themselves and the earth... oh well...
i live in a flod plain... and i have to have flood insurance... so i think that if my house gets washed away, thats just my fault for living in a flood plain isnt it... i think it is...
i was talking to this catholic guy on the plane about living in the "end times"... he was seemingly a total religious nut.. but we had a nice converstaion and agreed that human beings were destined to destroy the earth and themselves.. his belief of this came from the bible and mine came from common sense...
he was a cool guy actually...
he was more of the opinon that doom was imminent.. i was thinking that we were hundreds of years out... but we were all going to die because humanity lives ever further from the natural and sustainable garden of eden type ideals...
he told me he was getting over 40mpg out of his 88 tercel by never going over 55 and never accelerating hard... he also thought that the prius was the greatest car ever invented and he was all about stopping the destruction of the environment... he saw the large scale gathereing of natural resources as a rape of the earth and as a brazen destruction of god's creation for the sinful and terrible glorification of man...
it was hard for me to disagree with him...
i cant tell you about multi-headed monsters and all that stuff like in the bible.. but the 4 horsemen seem real to me... maybe not personified as actual horsemen.. but hey, i dont claim to know the future.. maybe there will be a guy called pestilence riding a horse.. and maybe there will be some crazy monsters... i have no real idea...
i wonder how many people were actually aware of the dangers of living in a city below sea level...
now there are all kinds of other public health concerns...

crazy...
Check out Cadillac Desert by Mark Reisner. It is the opposite inverse but similar in that it goes over in detail the risks and costs of building where one probably shouldn't. The PBS show sucked, but it is one of the best books I have ever read.
George
i saw the pbs show... i'll buy the book...
i just saw terminator 3... i rented it before i posted all this...
its weird how life follows threads
and then on a personal level there is always in the back of my mind the kathartic reckoning of jack...
its all going down man...
In a related vein, I gotta wonder how many people are sitting in the house in Temecula they paid 780,000 dollars for (note I didn't say "their house worth 780,000"), driving their 3 year old ford explorer they are still making payments on, putting 150 dollars a week into this car to drive 90 minutes each way to work in San Diego waiting for their 3% Interest only ARM to adjust up to 5.5 % (then 6.5 % in another year) and add 650 dollars a month in principal payments to the mix.
They probably thought it was a good idea at the time.
Question: Why aren't looters being shot on sight? Seems like Martial Law ain't what it used to be.
you should volunteer for duty down there... since they kicked you off of NIPRNET (also know as the "internet")...
i dont mean new orleans.. i mean temecula.. you could wag one of those big arrow signs that says "you are all idiots" and stand out front of a new development full of million dollar tract homes...

I know many of you have been following the news about the disaster that happened in LA. I also know that there are some of you that are sick of hearing about it. Well to be honest when i first heard about it, it touched a soft spot in my heart. But it wasn’t until I found out that my Auntie, who lived in New Orleans, had passed away yesterday, that I started to not only feel sad but filled with raged.
It was then that i made it a mission to find out every detail about this incident and how it was being taken care of. Now im not a important government official that can just make things happen, but im a born American citizen. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the American government is doing a HORRIBLE job in trying to fix this problem.
Five day? Five fucking days for the citizens of this nation to receive any proper care. Wait let me rephrase that. To receive ANY care. It took five days for aid helpers, food, water, whatever to be brought in. Is it just me or does this look like a big load of bullshit?
Im not going to blame Bush. Im blaming the whole damn government These mothafuckas are more concern with shit in Iraq to even give the time of day to citizens of there own damn nation? They were in a rush to go help the Tsunami victims, they where in a rush to help the UN victims, so where was the rush to help your own people? Yeah that right they’re not just “Blacks” they are Americans. And how dare they call the citizens of Louisiana “refugees”. Are you fucking kidding me?
Im sorry if im just rambling on like this but I need to get this out my system. So like I was saying. Another problem that im facing are these so called “thugs” or “Gangstas” I know that Louisiana has a high rate when it comes to crime. But come on people do you really think that now is the good time for any of that shit to be going down .There are people dying of starvation and the lack of water, bodies floating in the water face down, and stench in the air, and niggas are still trying to rob, kill, and rape other niggas? That shit doesn’t make any sense to me. Now is the time for them to come together and hold each other up, cause the government has clearly shown that they don’t give a fuck about you.
All im saying is that this whole situation is being taken care of in the most poorest fashion possible. This is not a third world country, this is America. People look up to us. This is the land of full and plenty. And when a disaster strikes we should be on top of it. Look at 911, that shit hit us when we weren’t even looking and we were on top of that immediately!
So why is the Government taking its extra little time to help the citizens of this nation? Well let me just leave you with this. If that hurricane hit a state where there was 70% whites instead of 70% blacks, would you think that it would be handled the same way? You do the math.
