Monday, October 3

My teammate, Allan Butler, was killed crossing "the strip" early Friday morning.
Allan had just started a new job at Reynold's, and recently wrapped up the Utah Cycling Association year long title. He left behind his wife, Jenny, and nine month old daughter Odessa. We are trying to organize various fundraisers to benefit the two of them.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to:
Jenny or Odessa Butler

The Allan Butler Charity Ride is being planned. Tentatively, it is scheduled for Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 9am. It will leisurely ascend Emigration Canyon (one of Allan’s favorite rides) and return to the start (parking and location being planned). Donations will be graciously accepted. Coffee will be served at the top of Emigration Canyon. A post-event raffle is being planned for cycling related donations. With any gifts or donations for the raffle please contact Gardie Jackson at 435-901-1972 or gardie@.att.net.

Also, "in the works", an ebay auction for Allan's family including signed jerseys from Dave Zabriskie (CSC), Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner), Jeff Louder (Navigators), and Burke Swindlehurst (Seasilver).

Really sorry to hear it Ryan.
We should always do what we can to support the extended community.

Thanks for putting this up E. Because of RB I was fortunate enough to get to know and ride with Allan. He was a great guy, the best. My thoughts and payers go out to his family.

stupid (read: most) drivers are evil. here in la two cyclists were killed by a catering truck that smashed into them (and dragged one under the truck for 1/4 mile) because he said he couldn't swirve or slow down because someone was cooking food behind him while they were blazing down the pch at 60 mph.

unfortunately, not just stupid people die in today's darwinism.

I have sent this info. to the major cycling news sites, but please forward this to friends and fellow cyclists.

Also, the Allan Butler Memorial Ride is slated for this Saturday at 9am from This is the Place Park to the top of Emmigration Canyon. Coffee will be served at the top. Please join us to remember Al. There will be a silent auction as well.

Several Utah riders have written about Allan, his racing, and his spirit. I have compiled the ones that I have found at

I know many have been sent to cyclingnews.com as well and hopefully they will eventually get up there as well. If you would like to add to what is on dailypeloton, please send it to me and I will get it on the site.
