Training Music

In an attempt to redirect some side discussions and to satisfy Zamudio's endless gripes about having more bike related topics I give you:

AN OPEN SURVEY OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC TO TRAIN TO.
Please let me know what you load on your iPod or what drills into your head when you're trying to stay motivated on your trainer.

Someone please gag Kelly Clarkson...

I really dig Desmond, but I'm into the first wave stuff.
Desmond was part of the "Protest Song" movement where the songs were about more than scoring babes at the local dance-hall. (insert analogy to rap here)
Lord Creator's "Independant" will tell you more about the history of Jamaica than any text book.

Not the greatest for training though. The problem with Reggae is that its by design a slowed down version of ska. Ska is set to match the heart-rate of dance-hall rudies. Reggae (from "Ragga") is much more chanty, slowed down to induce relaxation for the Ganja Warriors getting their religion on.
I tend to go with ska, ska-punk, and ska-core for training. The clash's version of Toots & Maytal's "Pressure Drop" is a favorite of mine.
(Also their cover of the Everly's "I Fought the Law").

Check out early (pre-Synchronicity) "The Police" too, they were originally HEAVILY influenced by Aswad. Sting still tries to sound like Marley.

Not sure if "Wind Beneath My Wings," "Titanic Theme" or "Jesus Built My Hotrod" would be best.
REALITY CHECK: Why just go with audio? You're on a trainer: watch a video. (no... I'm sure no one watches porn while on the trainer...)

Parke said...

Why not while watching porn?
Because it's hard to stay at tempo when your "saddle position" keeps changing...

I usually listen to Ruben Studdard when I am alone. That big teddy bear only won because we had a "night to remember" while the judges watched.

The best TT warmup is MISFITS, hands down.... Also Circle Jerks Live, 'Gig' is the name of it... This shit will get you ready to bring the pain.

Punk rock pushed my 40k PR down 1.5minutes...

I ride with my iPod every time I go out...

If you guys ever bonk, let me give you a heads up... When you are dying and on auto-pilot and in that zombie state as you ride towards home.... Just empty. I'm talking about going deep in the hole. Not like "man, I'm really tired...." I mean in the fucking ditch, when you think just pulling over and taking a nap is a good idea.

Do you know that feeling? Have you been there? Like you are thinking about puppies and how empty your water bottles are and you roll by a store but you don't have money for oatmeal creme pies... And you start crying for no fucking reason.

Then you got to put on Miles Davis, 'Kind of Blue' and turn your brain off. Hell, go to sleep if you want. Muscle memory will keep the cranks turning and the music will erase the pain and when you come to, you'll be passed out on your front porch with chicken skin and the shakes.

Rage Against the Machine gets me going for hard efforts, Southern Culture on the Skids for a fast cruise. Occasionally, I'll break out my CASSETTE of Helmet for a session on the trainer.

Anonymous said...

does anyone like the listening to the dead while riding?

Anonymous said...

Look, some people wait a lifetime, for a moment like this.

Anonymous said...

Tool (Sober or that live import), White Stripes (Elephant), Kings of Leon, the Hooters. Mostly the Hooters.

erik saunders said...

i like the cro-mags for rock music... like the song "we gotta know" is pretty good still... i could see that being really good for a TT warm up...

Anonymous said...

look at breaksblog.biz for a running tally of D+B mixes, you can also subscribe via podcast and have them new and fresh on your ipod every morning without having to work for it. i don't know what it is actually, just a jive beat in the background as i roll.

Anonymous said...

i listen to the aquabats 100% when i ride, they rock

BIKES, BEANS, AND BLUEGRASS said...

Jack Johnson on easy days, Widespread Panic on long mountain days and a mix of rock and dance on high intensity road days with a mix of rap.

Anonymous said...

I just listen to the sound bite of Erik talking about opening doors and closing them and not knowing if they are or aren't closed or open. You keep me going on the bike dude.

Kelly Clarkson will always be fat and gay. Erik is hot and manly. Actually Kelly Clarkson looks like a man to.

I'm not a poser you fake, I'm winning the only 6-day running in North America right now, and standing to make 3-4000 out of it. Who's pro now??? I don't see anyone else sitting in first place in a 6-day with 2 days left so shut up you poser. You could have picked someone we respect to imitate, but no you pick a lesbian.

OK, so you've just established your whiteness. I've lived/studied/traveled extensively in Kenya and Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe isn't even remotely like Either one. In fact, Zimbabweans haven't been so hot on wazungus (crackers) for a while. Riding around on a bike with a slick "colors of earth" paint job would get you killed.
It would be a little like you showing up to a black panthers rally in Detroit, with corn-rows, screaming "down with whitey".

Anyway, I tend to go "Anthemic" (four-on-the-floor rythms) with training songs:

"Brains" - Misfits
"Heard it through the Grapevine" - Marvin Gaye (though I often switch over to FUnk Bros./Ben Harper cover)
"Bankrobber" "I fought the Law" "Pressure Drop" - The Clash
lots o' Mighty Mighty Bosstones
lot's o' Social D
"The Well" - Ben Harper & Blind Boys
"Good Time" "Put yoself in my shoes" "Back to Love (cover)- BNH
"Pusherman" "Superfly" - Curtis Mayfiled
"Groove in the Heart" - Deeelite (though I'm getting sick of it)
"THis Music Won't Take You Higher" - Edwin Collins
"15 Petals" "45" "Complicated Shadows" "Tart" "I throw my Toys Around (w/ No Doubt)" - Elvis Costello
"Tell Mama" - Etta James
"Criminal" - Fiona Appel
"Everyday Sunshine" "Lyin Ass Bitch" "Skankin' to the Beat" "Party at Ground Zero (eerily prescient)" "Rock Island Line (w/ Little Richard)" - Fishbone
"Brain Stew" - Green Day
The Offspring
"Salty Balls" - Chef (Issac Hayes)
"Talkin' Loud" - Incognito
"It's You Thang" - Isleys
"Pressure Drop" - Izzy Stradlin
"get it Together" "Mother Popcorn" "Say it Loud" "Soul Power" - The J to tha B
"Lovelight" - James Cotton
"a World of Hurt" "Testify" - John Mayall
Maroon 5 - The faster stuff
"A GoGo" - Scofield
White Stripes (though I prefer ?uestlove's take on "Fell in love with a Girl [boy])
"Power and Glory pt II" - Lou Reed
The End of Silence Album - Rollins
Macy Gray
"Love Rollercoaster" - O-Hi-O Players (though I often sub the Chili Pepper's cover)
Operation Ivy
"1,2,3,4" "Cut Chemist Suite" -
Ozomatli
"Higher Ground" "Superstition" - Stevie Wonder (though i sub Chilli Peppers sometimes)
"We Want To Funk" - Parliamnent
"Girl Take it Easy" - Pietasters
Rancid (Op Ivy Jr.)
"Hold On" "Wrap it Up" - Sam and Dave
"Dance" "Papa" - Sly & Fam Stone
Soulive
"Voodoo Chile" - Hendrix and/or SRV
Skinnerbox
"Grandmaster"
"Blood makes noise" "Fat Man and Dancing Girl" - Suzanne Vega
"She caught the Katy" - Taj Mahal
"Rosita" "Stompede" - The Busters
The Clash
The Police (particularly Demo Man, Next to You, and Man in a Suitcase Live)
"Sooner or Later" "Bin Waitin" "Face in my Crowd" "Keep Him Away" "Mommy" - the Slackers
"A Message to YOu Rudi" - The Specials
"Aint to proud" - Temptations
"Soul Vaxination" "What is Hip (Live)" "YOu Strike My Main Nerve" "What is Hip (LIVE)" - Tower of Power
"Lyric Architect" - Westbound Train

-anyway. that's what went on my last session.

Damn Parker Brother, if you train enough to hear all that, you should be pretty good.

I skip alot, but yeah, 2:30 of tempo on the rollers.
Boring as damn hell but I got to "listen".

I'm no state champ...

Wait a minute... was that a dig??
RB- Utah State Champion of the World.

Anonymous said...

Parke - crazy set So your telling me that showing up to a Panthers rally would not be a good move ? being i am really fair skinned ? Just make sure that the sweat from buring the rollers does not tarnish the cold flake paint on the madone lance edition your ridding ... also what colour is the Zimbabwe national flag ??

Parke said...

Ryan-
No, that wasn't a dig. Practical trumps Thoeretical almost any day - and that's a Physicist saying that!

Crankbrothers-
White, Green, Yellow, Black. Same as 90% of all other African nations. Check the CIA database. And take some Ritalin.

Anonymous said...

Parke - im guessing the temps would be fairly warm to train and ride in Africa ? can you even get Gatorade in Africa ? this is a good post , you should have your own site tell erik to sign over the ownership (we can let it still run under his name!)

Parke said...

Again, check CIA.gov. You're talking about a MASSIVE continent stretching from the Mediterranean down to Antartica. Kilamanjaro sits on the equator but is so high in elevation that it has a glacier at the top. You can't generalize.
The hardest part wouldn't be finding a good climate, it would be finding bike-friendly roads.
Capetown, S. Africa would be my choice of training spots. Their summer is in the off-season, the roads are good, and everythng is super hip. Plus the North Sea Jazz festival is one of the best in the world.

Parke said...

If you're interested in bikes, music, and Africa:
You should read Neil Peart's "The Masked Rider".

Anonymous said...

parke - from rush ? i think ive read that a bunch of pros live and train in Cape Town in the offseason . Can you enjoy OX TAIL or is your diet too strict these days ?

Parke said...

Ox Tail is British. And no one enjoys British food.

Anyway, back to music...

Anonymous said...

Parke - how many children did BOB have ? looking for the title of the Peter Tosh movie ? do you know these ? and ive tried to find Ritalin on ebay but no luck ..

Parke said...

"The Harder They Come".
Check earlier references. It's like the rasta "Superfly"

I think I should listen to more Beck while training...

Anonymous said...

red x ? is this the name of the movie (Peter TOSh)
parke whats the deal with fixed gear bicycles and the caribbean? i work with a few guys who ride track fixed bicycles from this area?

Parke said...

Oh, Peter Tosh.
Sorry, I was thinking you were asking about Jimmy Cliff.
Red X is a movie about Peter Tosh.
There's also Rockers (Knock-off Harder They Come).
Neither of 'em will blow your hair back, I think.

Parke said...

And fixed gear bicycles are common in almost every flat developing nation (some hilly ones too) because then you don't need to pay for/repair expensive or relatively unreliable free-wheels and brakes.
Cheap, uncomplicated, easy to manufacture, easy to service, what's not to like?

Anonymous said...

parke - what about the band that does "Bad Boys" Inner Circle ? do you know anything about these dudes ?

Anonymous said...

why does J.A. not have any track cycle stars ?

Parke said...

Inner Circle, Aswad, SteelPulse. The trio of brit Roots Reggae. If you're into one, you should have the others.
Also, if you like the Dub Stylee/Rockers stuff (Linton Kwesi Johnson) check Shabba and King Django, or Jeremy Mushlin (a.k.a. DJ Mush 1) for something more modern.
That's it. (no one counts UB40). You have now exhausted my knowledge of UK Reggae. Now strike out on your own, Grasshopper.

Open Season is now closed... time for new posts.

KOOL thanks Parke for the info ....

Record was more than 125 in Sept. during that flame war that brought us "Eric Saunders", Erik's evil twin.

Crank Bros.
If you like Ragamuffin/Toasting, do a search on Allmusic. You mentioned Yellowman. I might suggest Dr. Ringding and a few others (eekamouse, shabba, MackaB, etc.).
Personally I tend to go with the topical stuff over the typical "me lovy longer" crap.
You might also like Maxi Priest and Buju Banton, who sing and MC, but I boycott Buju for personal reasons.
I spent some time with this guy Winston Grennan in his last moments, he had some great stories to tell about early Jamaican music. He's the one that turned me on to the back catalog of Island Records. THere's alot of good stuff there to enjoy.
Good luck and report back when you get something good. You got me to dust off some old albums I haven't listened to in years...

Parke said...

Oh and for CHARLES (who likes to ride with Jack Johnson) you might want to check out Chris Murray.

I can't imagine getting motivated or training to Reggae OR Jack Johnson...

Anonymous said...

Kraftwerk Tour de France soundtrack for high gears. "The Distance" by Cake. "Stakes is high" by De La Soul - I counted the bpm and it's about 186 for like the first 5 or six songs. Nerdy I know, but that's the perfect cadence!

Parke said...

De La Soul, EXCELLENT Suggestion.
And, if nerdy, scientifically proven. (see Dr. John Bargh's work on priming)
BPM (and the lyrics involved) have a very powerful effect on performance and acuity. So you and fu x 2 are both right on.

Parke said...

How's about trying to stay on topic there, bucko?

Parke said...

Not all rap sucks, we've already established the De La Soul groove.

I've been thinking I should dig up some POTUSA
